Article 113 Entrée en vigueur et application

Summary What does Article 113 of the AI act regulation say?

This is the entry into force and application article of the AI Act, establishing when the regulation takes legal effect and, crucially, when its various parts become binding.

Rather than a single application date, the article sets out a staggered timeline across multiple dates, meaning different parts of the regulation bite at different times.

This phased approach is common in large-scale EU regulations to give operators, authorities, and other affected parties time to prepare for specific obligations.

Important points:

  • The regulation enters into force twenty days after publication, but the general application date is 2 August 2026.
  • Chapters I and II, covering general provisions and prohibited practices, apply earlier from 2 February 2025.
  • Article 6(1) and its corresponding obligations, relating to the classification of certain high-risk AI systems, apply later, from 2 August 2027.
